Public Knowledge hosts "Emerging Tech" Symposia, DeVan Hankerson invited speaker on Artificial Intelligence & the Future of Work
The Capitol Visitors Center hosted Public Knowledge’s Emerging Tech DC, (ET/DC) policy event focusing on Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things and 3D Printing. The Goodfriend Groups Senior Director of Public Policy and Government Relations, DeVan Hankerson participated as an invited speaker on the panel session exploring AI and Future of Work. The panel also included Alberto Avalos from the Hispanic Heritage Foundation and Spencer Overton, President of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. Public Knowledge’s Emerging Tech DC day long policy event builds on the successes of the organization’s annual 3D Printing event by expanding the focus to include AI and IoT as its new issue areas.
This panel session on AI and the Future of Work touched on the economy-wide changes that will result from the widespread adoption of machine learning software. Tech industry leaders have voiced some concern about the potential impacts on employment and on public safety. Google co-founder Sergey Brin raised some of these questions in the company’s annual Founders Letter made available to the public just recently. In the letter he explains that artificial intelligence is a powerful tool capable of creating an exciting new opportunity landscape. He adds that, “such powerful tools also bring with them new questions and responsibilities. How will they affect employment across different sectors? How can we understand what they are doing under the hood? What about measures of fairness? How might they manipulate people? Are they safe?”
